Stairway to heaven est indiscutablement l'une des mélodies les plus connues au monde , ce titre qui s'étale sur près de 8 minutes a été archi diffusé sur toutes les radios du monde contribuant a construire la légende et a bâtir la gloire de Led Zeppelin. Présente  sur le quatrième album du groupe, dénué de titre, et appelé par les fans Led Zeppelin IV ( novembre 1971) Stairway to Heaven n'est cependant jamais sorti en single, Led Zeppelin préférant que son public écoute l'album.  Le disque fut un grand succès  avec plus de 1,2 million de disques vendus sur les deux derniers mois de l'année  1971, les ventes a ce jour se chiffrant  en dizaines de millions de copies vendues a travers la planète

 

Un doute subsiste sur une possibilité de plagiat (notamment sur la mélodie) avec la chanson  Almost Cut My Hair du groupe Crosby, Stills , Nash & Young, présente  sur l'album Déjà  vu 

A l'image de certains titres du double 'blanc' des Beatles , la signification et le sens des paroles de stairway to heaven portera matière a débat, certains y verront une apologie de la drogue , d'autres des allusions satanistes. Robert Plant et Jimmy Page ne donneront d'ailleurs que de vagues réponses a chaque fois que la question leur sera posée entretenant ainsi le mythe autour de ce chef d'oeuvre absolu .
