The Modern Lovers - Roadrunner

Je me souviens précisément de mon excitation lorsque je suis tombé dans une boutique d'Amsterdam sur la réédition Cd de l'unique album des Modern Lovers (CD Introuvable en France cette époque)

Ce disque fabuleux a bien failli pourtant ne jamais exister , en effet  il  fallut longtemps aux Modern Lovers pour enregistrer cet excellent album, précurseur de la vague punk  et new wave de la fin des années 70

Commencées fin 1971 à Boston, poursuivies au printemps 1972, et terminées en été 1973 à Los Angeles, les sessions d'enregistrement ne débouchèrent sur aucune sortie d'album. Miné par des problèmes internes, lâché par sa maison de disques Warner Bros, lasse d'attendre, le groupe de Jonathan Richman se sépare au début de 1974 en n'ayant rien publié. Il faudra attendre 1976 pour que Jonathan Richman, dépositaire du nom et des bandes enregistrées, édite l'album sur un petit  label indépendant avec les titres produits par John Cale.

Sur cet Album mythique qui comprend a la base 9 titres  (puis 12 dans sa réedition) se trouve 'Road runner ' un standard absolu de rock garage ,un titres fondamental du rock -punk  un morceau court, rapide énergique  dépouillé et construit autour d' une structure sur  deux accords.

La bande de furieux emmenée tambour battant par Jonathan Richman un fondu  total du Velvet underground   Jerry Harrison (qui rejoindra les Talkings Heads  par la suite) ,et David Robinson (qui rejoindra de son coté The Cars )  n'enregistrera plus rien apres ce chef d'oeuvre ,leur groupe restera néammoins  un meteorite dans l'histoire du rock

'roadrunner' leur unique 'single ' restant a jamais leur hymne , un standard fondateur du 'punk rock d'une grande modernité et d'une redoutable énergie.
