Top 100 - 100/95 - Space Oddity (david Bowie -1969)

Space oddity  ou quand Bowie avant d'inventer Ziggy  est  deja en avance sur son temps et installe ce titre lumineux  et obsessionnel dans la mémoire collective avant  même que l'homme ne pose le premier pas sur la lune.

Une chanson sublimée par la fascination de Bowie pour l'espace , peu de temps après son groupe s'appellera 'the spiders from mars ' et l'une de ses plus belles compositions a venir sera 'Life on mars '

La chanson illustrera d'ailleurs  la retransmission par la BBC des images de l'alunissage d'Apollo 11, Space Oddity constitue également le premier succès de Bowie auprès du grand public (numéro 5 au Royaume-Uni, puis numéro 1 lors de sa réédition en 1975). Son titre, signifiant littéralement : bizarrerie de l'espace, renvoie à celui du film de Stanley Kubrick 2001: A Space Odyssey, sorti l'année précédente.

La chanson raconte l'histoire d'un jeune astronaute, nommé Major Tom, sous la forme d'un dialogue entre le contrôle au sol et l'astronaute. Le décollage se déroule à la perfection (« you've really made the grade »), mais après sa sortie dans l'espace, le Major Tom semble s'abandonner à son vaisseau (« I think my spaceship knows which way to go ») et à l'espace ; il ne répond plus malgré l'insistance du contrôle au sol (« Can you hear me, major Tom? »).

Défnitivement visionnaire ce titre apparaît sur le second album de Bowie 'space oddity ' en 1969
