Les années soixante n'ont même pas encore commençées lorsque Ray Charles offre au monde ce qui restera comme l'une de ses chansons les plus connues mais surtout un CHEF D OEUVRE ABSOLU

improvisée par son auteur  lors d'un concert dans un club de Milwaukee. La chanson fût a l'époque jugée trop longue et le label  Atlantic décida de la couper en deux et de faire figurer les deux parties sur chaque face d'un 45 tours. Des la création de'  What' d I say' un album est mis en route ce disque le sixième de ray Charles qui a commencé  a enregistré dès 1950 s'apelle 'What ' d I say" et propose donc le titre  en deux parties (l 'idée de scinder un titre  assez long en deux parties  sera également appliquée a une autre chanson de cet album "rockhouse ') la puissance de ce 'single ' époustouflant portera cet album vers  les  sommets et permettra ainsi a Ray Charles de décrocher son premier disque d'or 

Cette chanson figure  en 10^e position dans le classement des 500 plus grandes chansons de tous les temps du magazine Rolling Stone.

Il souffle véritablemment un souffle épique a l'écoute de ce titre historique qui fera entrer son compositeur et interprète dans l'histoire.

Ray Charles  a l'aube  des années 60 frappe un énorme  coup de tonnerre avec ce titre hallucinant  et fantastiquement dansant 

il enfoncera le clou quelques mois plus tard en reprenant a son compte   'georgia in my mind ' le déchirant hymne écrit par Horgy  Carmichael dans les années 30  et dont ray Charles  originaire  de Georgie (Albany) deviendra l'ambassadeur universel

Rapellons également que lors de sa sortie 'what'd I say ' rencontra de gros problèmes de censure , bannie de certaines radios en raison d'un caractère a connotation érotique  elle valu aussi a son auteur de sérieux problèmes avec la police qui plaçait alors les concerts de Ray Charles  sous  surveillance renforçée en raison de risque de débordemments et d'émeutes

 'What'd I Say' a été reprise par a peu près tout le monde et si  il est impossible de tout les citer  quelques noms suffiront a vous faire une idée Elvis Presley (1964) Jerry Lee Lewis (1961) Trini Lopez ( 1963) Bo Diddley ( 1963) Roy Orbison ( 1964) Rare earth  (1972)  Nancy Sinatra (1967) ou encore  Cliff Richards (1961)

En France dès 1961 les Chats sauvages de Dick Rivers  en proposait une adaptation  traduite 'Est ce que tu le sais ?' suivis de près par Sylvie Vartan en 1962 qui ajoutait également cette adaptation a son répertoire

Top 100 - 100/14 Try a little tenderness (Otis Redding 1966)

 

Enregistrée en 1932 par Ray Noble and his orchestra 'Try a little tenderness' sera popularisé  plus de 30 après sa création par l'un des rois de la 'soul' Otis Redding 

Disparu tragiquement  le 10 décembre 1967 lors du crash de l'avion dans lequel il avait pris place avec son groupe The Bar -Keys Otis Redding nous a laissé une discographie courte  mais d'une rare intensité

Son premier album 'pain in my heart' (1964) est paru depuis déjà deux ans lorsque Otis proposera cette incroyable chanson sur l'album ' Complete & unbelievable :The Otis Redding dictionnary of soul 'of soul .Cet album (son cinquième et dernier album solo) rencontrera  par ailleurs un énorme succés notamment grâce au standard 'fa fa fa fa fa (sad song) ainsi que par la reprise habitée des Beatles (Day Tripper') 

C'est sur ce disque majeur de l'histoire de la Soul qu'on trouvera cette merveilleuse balade chantée par la voix magique et possédée de celui qui va disparaître peu de temps après 

Moins connue que 'sittin on the dock of the bay '  le tube posthume (publié le 8 janvier 1968, un mois après sa disparition et premier n^o 1 posthume de l’histoire des charts américains 'Try a Little tenderness  synthétise a elle seule l'âme de la musique soul grâce a son rythme crescendo totalemment hallucinant et par la fantastique dynamique de son inteprète
